The Detroit Tigers keep stocking up on left-handed pitchers.

They agreed to a minor-league deal with veteran southpaw Derek Holland this week. Holland, 34, announced the news on his social media account.

A native of Newark, Ohio, was a reliable starter for the first decade of his career, primarily with the Texas Rangers. He posted a 3.57 ERA in 171 innings with the San Francisco Giants in 2018, striking out 169 batters in 171 innings.

Over the last two seasons, Holland has posted a 6.34 ERA in 125 innings, striking out 127 batters but allowing 32 home runs.

He signed a minor-league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season and made the team out of summer camp.

Holland started against the Tigers on Aug. 8, giving up five consecutive hits — including four home runs — in the first 11 pitches in the game. Remarkably he managed to recover from the disastrous start to pitch into the sixth inning.

The Tigers also signed infielder Drew Ward, 26, to a minor-league deal. Ward also announced the news on his social media channels.

An Oklahoma native, Ward was a third-round draft pick of the Washington Nationals in 2013. He hit well in a short stint in Triple-A Fresno in 2019 but was released in 2020 and spent the summer with an independent league team.

Ward plays first and third base and could be used as depth in Triple-A Toledo or Double-A Erie.
