Nvidia has launched a pretty cool AI-powered app that lets you “take photos” even if you’ve never held a camera. Canvas is a free tool that turns your drawings into realistic landscape images. In fact, you don’t even have to draw – a few simple doodles will be enough!

The whole concept sounds fairly simple, although it took lots of complicated engineering and programming to make Canvas. You can choose a palette of real-world materials, like grass, clouds, rocks, snow, and so on. All you need to do is paint some simple shapes and lines with it, and the AI model will turn them into realistic scenes in real-time. Pretty cool, right?

Still, if you don’t like what you see, you can swap material and change the entire scene if you please. Canvas offers nine styles that modify the look and feel of a painting and fifteen different materials from the real world. You can paint on different layers to keep elements separate, which will make it easier to edit them. There are some sample scenes to start with, but you can also doodle your own “photo” from scratch. When you’re done, you can import your work into Adobe Photoshop and refine it further.

If the concept sounds familiar, that’s because it is: Nvidia first introduced the concept in 2019. However, the beta version is now actually available for download and you can try it out yourself. I was very excited to do it and share the results, but then I realized there was a catch. You can only download and use Canvas if your computer is equipped with NVIDIA RTX GPU.

So, I will leave you without my own results, but I hope to see some of yours if your computer meets the system requirements. You can download Canvas here, read more about it here, and you’ll find the user guide here.
