When Scotland played Wales at Murrayfield two weeks ago, their 23-strong match squad included four players born in South Africa and another — Huw Jones — who had come to prominence playing there.

Clearly, Scotland has moved on from the era of the Kilted Kiwis to that of the Jock Boks. And the trend is only likely to continue as Pierre Schoeman, the 26-year-old loose-head prop who joined Edinburgh in 2018, will become eligible for his adopted country in just a few months’ time.
