Netherlands vs Ukraine LIVE: Euro 2020 latest score, goals and updates from fixture tonight

Euro 2020: Daily briefing

The Netherlands take on Ukraine at the Johan Cruijff Arena Arena in Amsterdam as Group C begins at Euro 2020.

The Oranje will hope that Memphis Depay can fire them towards the latter stages of the tournament, with the Lyon striker linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.

The former Manchester United star is one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot, with Romelu Lukaku’s double against Russia placing him at the front of the queue already.

Frank De Boer is under pressure heading into the tournament, knowing that his diversion away from the classic Dutch 4-3-3 is not popular, but the former Ajax and Barcelona defender maintains he is committed to his system.

“Of course that is not something you often experience, but it is not something that we should make very big,” De Boer said at a press conference when asked about his views on the direct message when a plane was flown over the Dutch training camp in Zeist with a banner which read: “Frank. Play 4-3-3”.

“This is just someone who has an opinion and has shown it that way. We always try to play dominant football and that’s what we want with this system.

“I think 5-3-2 sounds negative, with 3-5-2 you already have fewer defenders. We want to get our hands on the game, which means your wingbacks are always quite high. I think with this set-up we have the best people in the right places. Players who have played great all year.”

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

40’: A stunning save from Ukraine stopper George Buschan keeps the game goalless, as he parries Wijnaldum’s magnificent volley from the edge of the box. Buschan has to alter his direction, showing great reactive skills.

The ball was kept in play, and Denzel Dumfries somehow missed a free header at the near post from six yards out.

This has been a fantastic first half.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

‘30: This opening half hour has been fantastic, despite the lack of goals. Both sides are committed to attacking, with the latest shot coming from West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko, who turns Daley Blind inside out on the edge of the box, but his shot, with his weaker right foot, wasn’t really going to trouble Martin Stekelenburg.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

22’: This game is remarkably open, swinging from side to side without a moment’s pause. Ukraine had several chances to shoot from distance, mainly from Malinovskyi. Whilst at the other end, Memphis Depay is causing trouble with his movement in between the lines and deft touches.

The opening 20 minutes have flown by. Game just missing a goal at this stage.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

10’: Ukraine are about to be forced into a change here, as Oleksandr Zubkov has suffered an injury, and doesn’t look able to continue. Shakhtar Dontesk’s Marlos is replacing Zubkov.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

5’: Another chance for Netherlands. Buschan performs a great save to deny Dumfries as Holland work it around the periphery of the Ukraine box. Nice interplay between Depay and Wijnaldum in the build up.

This has been a fantastic opener.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands 0-0 Ukraine

2’: First chance of the game already! Netherlands hit Ukraine on the counter following a scramble inside their own penalty box. Memphis Depay gains possession of the ball and runs straight towards the Ukraine, nutmegging Zabarnyi in the process. Depay runs to the edge of the box before unleashing a shot, but it’s well saved by Buschan in the Ukraine goal.

Bright opening to the game.

Euro 2020: The Netherlands vs Ukraine

We predict who will come out on top in tonight’s final match.

“Netherlands are sure to come out with a win over Ukraine with the amount of stars they have in their squad. While it won’t be an easy match for the Dutch, a victory seems probable.”

Player to watch: Ukraine’s Ruslan Malinovskyi is one to watch in tonight’s game.

Malinovskyi, who plays for Atalanta in Serie A, has a ferocious left foot, and can score from just about any area in the opposition half and is equally adept at scoring from free kicks.

He was bought by Atalanta in the summer of 2019 from Belgian side Genk, and took time to adapt to his surroundings in Italy.

However, over the last 18 months he’s become an integral part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, and has went some way in replacing the club’s most influential player, Papu Gomez in the last six months of 2020/21.
