UMS-Wright senior left-hander and Mississippi State signee Maddux Bruns has been named the Gatorade Alabama Baseball Player of the Year.

Bruns, expected to be a first or second-round draft pick in the MLB, next month already was named Mr. Baseball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

“Maddux Bruns is a consummate leader,” UMS-Wright head coach Kevin Raley said in the release. “He is the hardest-working kid I’ve ever coached, and he is very focused.”

Bruns went 7-0 for the Bulldogs as a senior with a 0.86 ERA. He allowed just 13 hits and six earned runs in 49 innings pitched. The ASWA also named him the Class 5A Pitcher and Player of the Year.

He is the second UMS player to win the award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Bruns is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award to be announced in July.

Bruns struck out 102 batters this year while walking just 19 in 49 innings pitched. He also posted a .337 batting average with three home runs, 17 RBI and a .450 on-base percentage.

Off the field, he has volunteered locally on behalf of his school’s Crimson & Grey Day annual fundraiser and as a youth baseball coach and maintained a 3.61 GPA in the classroom.

Bruns joins recent Gatorade Alabama Baseball Players of the Year, including Pico Kohn (2019-20, Chilton County High School), Gunnar Henderson (2018-19, John T. Morgan Academy), Garrett Wade (2017-18, Hartselle High School), and Tanner Burns (2016-17, Decatur High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.

Through Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” Bruns has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of their choosing. Bruns is also eligible to submit a 30-second video explaining why the organization they chose is deserving of one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants, which will be announced throughout the year. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have totaled more than $2.7 million across 1,117 organizations.
