Outfielder Ka’ai Tom was designated for assignment by the A’s as a corresponding move to reinstating Stephen Piscotty from the paternity list, according to transactions pages on the Major League Baseball and A’s websites. The A’s had not announced the move Monday night.

Tom, 26, was a Rule 5 draft selection by the A’s from Cleveland. If Tom clears waivers, he must be offered back to Cleveland and can be outrighted to the minors only if Cleveland decides not to reacquire him.

Tom appeared in nine of the A’s first 16 games but has only two plate appearances since April 10; he was 1-for-16 with a single and an RBI. Tom also pitched in a game for the A’s – he made his first major-league appearance on the mound before notching his first hit – and threw a scoreless inning in a loss to the Astros.

In placing Piscotty on the paternity list Friday, the A’s called up infielder Vimael Machin, who provides backup at shortstop and third base. Tom made the initial roster out of spring training over Machin and Seth Brown, who was called up April 6. Brown, like Tom, is a left-handed hitter who can play corner outfield positions. Brown is 4-for-24 with two home runs since his call-up.

With a doubleheader Tuesday, the A’s will be allowed to activate a 27th player to their roster for the day. They could target a reliever for bullpen depth or add a third catcher with Sean Murphy unlikely to start both seven-inning games against the Twins.
